Author Guidelines

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

The J-CASP is  published bi-annually: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter during the academic year. Though we accept submissions year-round, our submission deadline for the Spring/Summer issue is April 15; the Fall/Winter deadline is October 30.

We seek scholarly research articles for double-masked peer review. In addition to empirical write-ups, we also seek research-to-practice articles, theory-to-practice articles, and reviews of literature that include recommendations and implications. Appropriate articles that are not write-ups of empirical research studies will be considered for double-masked peer review based on scholarly rigor—more reflective, practitioner-based articles will be considered for publication as a non-peer-reviewed promising practice article. We will also consider shorter exploratory pieces. Please note that for all genre of articles, the majority of cited references should be more recent than not (within the past five years), not including seminal works in their respective academic fields.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Feature Articles

Submit your manuscript as a Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx, etc.) file, double-spaced with 12-point Times New Roman font. Typical manuscripts are around 6,000 words (however, please let us know if you plan to submit a longer article!) and must adhere to the APA Publication Manual (7th edition) guidelines for writing, citation, and documentation style. Please include an abstract not exceeding 250 words. The J-CASP will not consider previously published articles or manuscripts under consideration elsewhere. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all statements in their manuscript. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission for reprinting figures or quotations exceeding fair use regulations.  Please submit manuscripts (except for promising practices, op-eds, and exploratory pieces) through our online system: https://journals.tdl.org/jcasp/index.php/jcasp/user/register.

Promising Practices & Op-Eds

We are also seeking informal reflective articles pertaining to promising practices. Typical promising practices articles are about 1000–1,500 words; however, they are more than welcome to be longer. The article should contain at least 5 APA references cited in the essay. Overtly opinionated articles will be considered for publication as an op-ed piece; please indicate if you are submitting as such. The J-CASP will not consider previously published articles or manuscripts under consideration elsewhere.  Please send promising practices and op-ed pieces directly to the editor at JCASP_Editor@txstate.edu. Guidelines are as follows:

Authors should specify in the article the area of specialty, type of content, and promising practice(s).

Areas of specialty include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Learning support
  • Learning centers
  • Advising
  • Diversity
  • Administration
  • Policy
  • Professional development
  • Technology
  • Et Cetera

Promising practices include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Affective development
  • Beneficial knowledge (e.g. useful in future credit classes or jobs)
  • Critical thinking skills
  • Cognitive self-awareness
  • Supportive learning environment
  • Variety of instructional methods
  • Active learning techniques
  • Learning strategies
  • Integrating technology
  • Distance learning
  • Et cetera

Types of content include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Classroom practices
  • Activities
  • Assignments
  • Infographs
  • Et cetera

Please include at least 5 research- or evidence-based citations according to APA Style, 7th Ed.

Exploratory Pieces

The J-CASP is now accepting exploratory pieces. These short articles are approximately 1000 words with at least 2-3 references cited in the text. However, they are welcome to be much longer. Exploratory pieces should introduce a conversation and generate implications for future research and practice. Whereas a promising practice can be considered a stepping stone toward further scholarly rigor, an exploratory piece can be considered as opening the door for further inquiry.

Make sure the subject line indicates Promising Practice, Exploratory Piece, or Op-Ed as appropriate. Photography

We accept unsolicited submissions of photography from all parts of Texas to be considered for issue covers and section breaks. We will accept photos year-round. We cannot offer payment; however, we will acknowledge the photographer in the journal issue with a byline that will include their name and contact/website information.

J-CASP Photography Guidelines:
• Full color
• Texas landscapes and landmarks (urban or rural)
• No recognizable faces
• Portrait orientation
• High resolution

Send the photo with a title and the author’s name as it should appear in the byline, and please indicate “Texas Photo” in the subject line of the email to JCASP_Editor@txstate.edu.

For those who submit, the J-CASP editors will get back to you as soon as possible, but please allow up to three months for a response. However, if your photo is published elsewhere, please let the J-CASP editors know immediately.

As is the case with authors, photographers who publish with this journal agree to the following terms: 

Photographers retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0) license that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgment of the work’s authorship and initial publication in this journal. In summer of 2024, the decision was made to change our license from CC BY to CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 as we believed it was better aligned with the progress of the journal and its contributors. 

Ensuring a Blind Review

Submitted manuscripts deemed appropriate and suitable for J-CASP will undergo a peer-review process by members of the J-CASP review board. The review process will take approximately two months, including three weeks for authors to address reviewer comments and suggestions. 

To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review for submission to this press, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the authors and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties:

  • The authors of the document have deleted their names from the text, with "Author" and year used in the references and footnotes, instead of the authors' name, article title, etc.
The authors of the document have removed personal information from the file properties by taking the following steps:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows:
    • Go to File
    • Select Info
    • Click on Check for Issues
    • Click on Inspect Document
    • In the Document Inspector dialog box, select the check boxes to choose the type of hidden content that you want inspected.
    • Click Remove All
    • Click Close
    • Save the document
  • Microsoft Word for MacOS:
    • Go to Tools
    • Click Protect Document
    • Select Remove personal information for this file on save
    • Click OK and save the file
  • PDF:
    • Go to File
    • Select Properties
    • Remove any name in the author field
    • Click OK
    • Save the document

Plagiarism

Editors of J-CASP reserve the right to administer plagiarism checks on submitted works performed by Turnitin software. 

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point Times New Roman font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
